NEWS: HP Announces 'Smart' Cooling Solution for Data Centers. Or more accurately, "Dynamic Smart Cooling." What does it mean? I'm not sure -- The article mentions analysis up front, and "directed cooling resources within the computer center ... where and when needed." Of course, it'll cost a ton of cash, but HP believe that it will pay for itself in energy costs savings. GreenBiz Apr 4 2003 1:35AM ET [Moreover - moreover...]

The IPS question. Does intrusion prevention really work? Enterprises and vendors alike are seeking the answer -- and figuring out what it means for their businesses' futures. This isn't an HP specific story, but it's of particular interest to me, since I've been working for two years on using OVO/U as an IPS solution. I feel that a lot of the "issues" and "problems" of IDS systems, especially reactive IDS systems, as outlined in this article have been solved by my particular solution. Utilizing the agentry of OVO, we're able to control more of the enterprise security than just the Firewall. We can actually be reactive on a host by host basis. Articles like this are very interesting to me -- feel free to point me at any that you might come across. [InfoWorld: Top News]

HP trims Unix server prices. It's a move to deal with stiff competition from Sun and IBM, and probably makes sense. It's also a sign of things to come -- current systems use the PA 8700, and we're about to see "Mako" the PA8800 in pretty short order. ZDNet Apr 3 2003 8:40AM ET [Moreover - moreover...]

HP Mulls New Level for Partner Program -- HP is thinking about adding a "Silver" level to the PartnerOne program. I'm not sure their solution is the RIGHT solution, but nevertheless, they are aware of the problem.

Gnome on HP-UX? It's true. You can run the gnome desktop on your HP-UX box. It works on servers or workstations. However, I wouldn't attempt to run it on a 710, it's quite a resource hog. However, it is MUCH better than CDE, and you haven't lived until you've heard your B1000 play sounds when the gui loads.

HP finds a thrilla in Mozilla. Hewlett-Packard will sidestep a Netscape-branded browser for its open-source original, a move the company calls a vote of confidence for the open-source model. As someone who uses Mozilla anyway, I think this is an excellent move. Although it should be pointed out that Netscape is just a modified form of Mozilla, I have found that on my system (K360 w/HP-UX 11) Mozilla is much, much faster than Netscape. In future releases of HP-UX, they will be provided BOTH Netscape and Mozilla. [CNET News.com]

Michigan First With A Law That Could Outlaw VPNs -- Not HP Related, but if interest to anyone. The headline is a bit deceptive, since the INTENT of the aforementioned law is to deal with hacking -- oddly, it's a way of dealing with programs like Napster. In essence, it renders illegal, any technology (hardware or software) that hides the communications. The broad way in which it's worded would, if taken by the letter of the law, bar the use of NAT and VPN technologies.
Obviously it's the un-intended features of this law that has everone up in arms. Similar laws are pending in Massachusetts, Texas, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Alaska, Tennessee and, my own state, Colorado.
There are lessons here. First of all, when the technical community resists dealing with 1000 Pound Gorrilla's like America's recording industry, they will have to deal with it in another form as a result of those forces lobbying technologically clueless politicians. It's better, IMHO, for the internet technical community to take the bull by the horns and find solutions to these problems, before some state lawmaker thinks he's found a way to deal with it.
