The Museum of Unworkable Devices -- Two Non-HP links in a Day! A new record! Slashdot tells us about the Museum of Unworkable Devices. For the obligatory HP Reference, I'll just say that "IT/A could not be found in this Museum." Actually, I was a huge fan of IT/A, but someone should've told HP that they couldn't charge $70k for a Sysadmin Tool. [Slashdot]

HP Nails Digital Music in Theory, Not in Practice. I knew I could find a way to Link HP and the "Anti-Nat/VPN Law" (Mentioned below). Here's a Washington Post article on HP's changing roadmap regarding digital entertainment from ripped CD's. I know ripped music is extremely popular, but as an audiophile, I have exactly 0 MP3's on my system. They don't sound good to me. Am I alone? How Dell plans to shave HP's profits. When both companies suffer even worse stock plummets, they can always do Carly Vs. Dell-Dude on Pay-Per-View! SiliconValley.com Mar 27 2003 10:27AM ET [Moreover - moreover...]

Michigan First With A Law That Could Outlaw VPNs -- Not HP Related, but if interest to anyone. The headline is a bit deceptive, since the INTENT of the aforementioned law is to deal with hacking -- oddly, it's a way of dealing with programs like Napster. In essence, it renders illegal, any technology (hardware or software) that hides the communications. The broad way in which it's worded would, if taken by the letter of the law, bar the use of NAT and VPN technologies.
Obviously it's the un-intended features of this law that has everone up in arms. Similar laws are pending in Massachusetts, Texas, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Alaska, Tennessee and, my own state, Colorado.
There are lessons here. First of all, when the technical community resists dealing with 1000 Pound Gorrilla's like America's recording industry, they will have to deal with it in another form as a result of those forces lobbying technologically clueless politicians. It's better, IMHO, for the internet technical community to take the bull by the horns and find solutions to these problems, before some state lawmaker thinks he's found a way to deal with it.
